Beneath the surface at Aliwal Shoal, the ocean does something it rarely does anywhere else. It is ranked among the finest shark diving sites on the planet, this compact reef holds a concentration of predators and history that you won’t find anywhere else.
At least six species move through these waters across the year: ragged-tooth sharks gather to breed from May through October, oceanic blacktips patrol year-round, tigers cruise through from February to April, and bull sharks and hammerheads complete a lineup most divers spend a lifetime chasing across oceans.
It's the Agulhas Current that makes it possible, sweeping prey into range and drawing predators in to feed, while the shoal's pinnacles and rock formations offer hunter and hunted alike a place to hide, hover, and hunt.
